2017 Contribution Letter

July 13, 2017

Dear Supporter:

Thank you for your continued prayers and support! For 24 years, I had the pleasure of serving in the U.S. House of Representatives. Being a Member of Congress was one of the greatest blessings in my life. During my entire political career, I fought racism, injustice and advocated for individuals who normally get left behind. They redrew my District in order to make it harder for me to be re-elected. Then sadly, on July 8, 2016, I was falsely accused by the Federal government. It is not a coincidence that these charges were filed immediately prior to my August 30th Primary Election, which I ultimately
lost.

For the last year and a half, I have been fighting the Department of Justice, which has unlimited resources. They have smeared my good name. They are trying to take my freedom. I am asking for your help to fight these false charges. We are trying to raise $1 million. As you may know, my trial started on April 26, 2017, which ended with a guilty verdict. While we were disappointed by the outcome, I want to emphasize that this is far from over! The jury’s verdict is NOT final! I will continue to fight!

On June 8, 2017, we submitted a Motion for New Trial and Motion for Judgment of Acquittal. Our goal with the motions is simple – to reverse the jury’s verdict. We are pleased that United States District Judge Timothy J. Corrigan recently issued an order for a motions hearing on Monday, August 7, 2017 at 3:00 p.m. On that date, the Judge will hear oral arguments on both motions at the United States District Court in Jacksonville, Florida. This proceeding is open to the public – please plan to attend! I hope the courtroom will be filled with my supporters!

We are hopeful that the Judge will rule in our favor. However, we are preparing for a possible sentencing hearing in a few months if a new trial or judgment of acquittal is not granted. The good news is that the Judge is NOT required to impose any term of imprisonment based on the charges in my case. We are contacting individuals who may be willing to write letters of support and/or speak on my behalf at the sentencing hearing. Prior to sentencing, we would present the Judge with letters of support from family, friends, constituents and colleagues so that he can fully appreciate my good character and accomplishments. These letters should be received as soon as possible but no later than Friday, August 18, 2017. For additional information regarding the letters of support, please click here.

I need your help and support! There are experts that we need to hire and documents we need to prepare for a new trial, sentencing hearing and/or appeal. If you are able to contribute, please know that every little bit will help tremendously!
